The Illinois Praire Path consists of over 50 miles of crushed limestone trails.
There are three main branches which head in different directions from the trail head in Wheaton. The
"Main Stem" heads east from Wheaton to Forest Park. The "Elgin Branch" heads northwest from Wheaton
to South Elgin where it connects with the Fox River Trail. The "Aurora Branch" heads southwest from
Wheaton to Aurora where it connects to the Fox River Trail.
NOTE: The "Main Stem" has been extended recently from 1st Avenue in Maywood east to Des Plaines Avenue in Forest Park
via a new bridge over the Des Plaines River. The trail now ends at the Forest Park cTA station. Heading east on the Illinois
Prairie path, cross 1st Avenue at the light which is immediately north of the trail. Continue east along Maybrook Drive
(towards the Court complex) and you will come to the new bridge over the Des Plaines River.
In addition to the three main branches there are two western branches. The "Batavia Spur" branches
off of the "Aurora Branch" at Interstate 88 and travels northwest to the Fox River Trail in Batavia.
The "Geneva Spur" branches off of the "Elgin Branch" north of Winfield (at the intersection of
County Farm Road and Geneva Road) and travels west to the Fox River Trail north of Geneva.
The "Geneva Spur" uses a series of sidewalks to navigate through West Chicago. There is also a
sidewalk connection between this trail and the Illinois Prarie Path. These sections can be a
little tricky to follow so check the map before going.
