The Long Prairie Trail is a 14-plus mile paved trail running across Boone County. The eastern
end is at the border of Boone County and McHenry County. The western end is near the town of
Rockton where it connects with the 5.8 mile unpaved Stone Bridge Trail that continues west to
Roscoe.
This is a wonderful rural rail-to-trail which for the most part is out in the middle of nowhere.
The town of Poplar Grove in the middle of the trail has a couple of stores where refreshments can
be purchased.
Note that this trail has quite a few jarring bumps (actually depressions in the asphalt) so be
careful when you ride it.
In a car, the eastern trail head can be reached by taking Route 173 west from Harvard. Turn right on
County Line Road and go approximately a half mile to the parking lot on the left side of
the road.
Want to bike to the trail? If you like paved rural roads and don't mind a couple of rolling hills the following route of just
under 8 miles can be used to get to the trail head from the Metra station in Harvard: Turn right onto
South Ayer Street. After a couple of blocks take the angle left onto South Morengo Road. Turn right at
Airport Road. Go left on Flat Iron Road. Turn right onto Streit Road. Turn right onto County Line Road.
The trail head will be on your left a half mile after you cross Route 173.
